Excitation and trapping of lower hybrid waves in striations

چکیده
The theory of lower hybrid LH waves trapped in striations in warm ionospheric plasma in the three-dimensional case is presented. A specific mechanism of trapping associated with the linear transformation of waves is discussed. It is shown analytically that such trapping can take place in elongated plasma depletions with the frequencies below and above the lower hybrid resonance frequency of the ambient plasma. The theory is applied mainly to striations generated artificially in ionospheric modification experiments and partly to natural plasma depletions in the auroral upper ionosphere. Typical amplitudes and transverse scales of the trapped LH waves excited in ionospheric modification experiments are estimated. It is shown that such waves possibly can be detected by backscattering at oblique sounding in very high frequency VHF and ultra high frequency UHF ranges. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Simulations of ionospheric turbulence produced by HF heating near the upper hybrid layer
Heating of the ionosphere by high-frequency (HF), ordinary (O) mode electromagnetic waves can excite magnetic field aligned density striations (FAS), associated with upper and lower hybrid turbulence and electron heating. We have used Vlasov simulations in one spatial and two velocity dimensions to study the induced turbulence in the presence of striations when the O-mode pump is mode converted...
متن کاملNumerical study of mode conversion between lower hybrid and whistler waves on short-scale density striations
[1] We present a theoretical and numerical study of linear mode conversion of lower hybrid waves interacting with short-scale density striations in the Earth’s ionosphere. The efficiency of the conversion process is investigated for different sets of parameters such as the angle of incidence, the wavelength of the lower hybrid wave, and the size of the striation. It is found that the most effic...
متن کاملLaboratory studies of field-aligned density striations and their relationship to auroral processes*
Magnetic field-aligned structures in current, density, and temperature are common features of the auroral ionospheric plasma. These structures both generate and transform low frequency waves in the plasma. The results of laboratory studies of two processes involving magnetic field-aligned density depletions ~striations! that play a role in auroral plasma dynamics are presented. The first proces...
متن کاملNumerical Studies and Simulation of the Lower Hybrid Waves Current Drive by using Fokker – Planck Equation in NSST and HT-7 Tokamaks
Recent experiments on the spherical tokamak have discovered the conditions to create a powerful plasma and ensure easy shaping and amplification of stability, high bootstrap current and confinement energy. The spherical tours (ST) fusion energy development path is complementary to the tokamak burning plasma experiment such as NSTX and higher toroidal beta regimes and improves the design of a po...
متن کاملTrapping of lower hybrid waves in elongated plasma depletions in the Earth’s ionosphere
Conditions for trapping of lower hybrid waves in plasma depletions in the Earth’s ionosphere are discussed. It is shown that the trapping can take place for the frequencies not only below but also above the lower hybrid resonance frequency of the background plasma, which is important for the formation of the downshifted maximum of the secondary electromagnetic emission. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
